Tension.  Stories are born from characters who want something and set off to achieve it. Inevitably, they’ll hit roadblocks on their journey. Conflict follows, and we’re interested to see how they deal with it. For the author, the trick is plotting so conflict keeps smoldering and tension keeps readers in the story.
